Hirikati S. Nagaraj, M.D.
Dr. Nagaraj was born in India and became a US citizen in August 1975. He has been practicing surgery in Louisville for the past 26 years. He went to medical school in Mysore, India and after completing his general surgery residency program in Cincinnati, Ohio he did his pediatric surgery fellowship in Miami Florida and Memphis Tennessee. He holds board certification in general surgery and pediatric surgery. He is a tenured associate professor of surgery in the department of surgery and pediatric surgery. He is currently Chief of General and Thoracic Surgery at Kosair Children’s Hospital and past president of Kosair Children’s medical staff. In addition he belongs to various local, national and international medical organizations. He has also written numerous publications on a wide variety of topics. His medical and surgical expertise includes pediatric oncology, neonatal surgery and chest reconstruction. Other interests include golf, Louisville Cardinal’s, Cincinnati Bengals and enjoying his new granddaughter.
Mary E. Fallat, M.D.
Dr. Fallat is a central New York native who has lived in Louisville since 1979. After obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Northwestern University, she went to medical school at the State University of New York at Syracuse. During General Surgery training at the University of Louisville, Dr. Fallat completed a research fellowship in the study of Mullerian inhibiting substance (MIS), a reproductive tract hormone, at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. Two years of Pediatric Surgery fellowship training followed at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Fallat returned to Louisville in 1987 to begin a practice of pediatric surgery, where she is now a tenured Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, and the Acting Division Director of Pediatric Surgery in the Department of Surgery. Her practice is in general pediatric surgery (see general description under “Specialties”). Dr. Fallat has a special interest in trauma and burn care and is the Director of Trauma at Kosair Children’s Hospital. She is a governor-appointed member of the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services and the Project Director for two federal grants awarded to the Board. She also has an interest in medical ethics and serves as surgical representative to the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Bioethics. She has a research laboratory in reproductive endocrinology, and is continuing study of the hormone MIS that she worked on as a fellow at Harvard University. Attendant with this interest is the development of surgical expertise in children with intersex anomalies.
In her spare time, Dr. Fallat enjoys being with her husband and three children, is an amateur photographer, pianist and likes to travel and discover unclaimed treasures in antique malls.
Sheldon J. Bond, M.D.
Dr. Bond is a Wisconsin native who has practiced surgery in Louisville for the last 17 years. After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Marquette University, he went to medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he was elected to the honorary Alpha Omega Alpha Fraternity for academic excellence. During General Surgery training at the University of Louisville, Dr. Bond completed a research fellowship in fetal surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. His two years of Pediatric Surgery training followed at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Currently, he holds board certifications in General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He is a tenured faculty member of the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville. In addition to authoring numerous publications on a wide variety of surgical topics, he has been an invited overseas lecturer and surgeon. Medical interests and expertise include surgical diseases of the fetus and newborn, pediatric oncology, pediatric trauma, and critical care. He is the current President of the medical staff at Kosair Children’s Hospital. Outside interests include the fine arts, golf, tennis, youth athletic coaching, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers.
David S. Foley, M.D.
Dr. Foley is a native of western New York, and arrived in Louisville in July 2003. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and English from Williams College in 1990. After completing a general surgery residency at Wake Forest University, he participated in a research fellowship studying the use of both perifluorocarbon liquid ventilation and extracorporeal life support (ECLS) for the treatment of severe respiratory failure at the University of Michigan Hospitals. Dr. Foley continued his training as Chief Resident in pediatric surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Oklahoma, finishing in June 2003.
Dr. Foley is currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. His areas of clinical interest include surgical laparoscopy in children, as well as pediatric trauma and surgical critical care.
Outside interests include music, athletics and spending time with this wife and three children.
